High-Tolerance Milling and Turning in Fremont with Condor Manufacturing
When a drawing says the tolerance is tight, the part is only as good as the process that makes it and the check that proves it. Condor Manufacturing is a family-run Fremont shop, established in 2006, listed here for high-tolerance milling and turning, CNC machining, lathe machining and Zeiss CMM programming, in aluminum, steel, brass and industrial plastics. This page explains what tolerance means in practice and how to prepare a request for tight-tolerance work.
What a tolerance is
A tolerance is the amount a dimension is allowed to vary. A hole drawn at 0.500 inches with a plus or minus 0.001 tolerance can measure between 0.499 and 0.501. Tighter tolerances take slower cuts, more careful setups, controlled temperature and better measurement. They also raise cost, so it makes sense to tighten only the dimensions that need it.
Milling and turning at tight tolerances
Milling can hold close tolerances on flat faces, hole locations and slots. Turning is well suited to round features such as diameters and bores. The listing names both, plus lathe machining. When a part has features that must line up, such as a bore concentric with an outside diameter, machining both in the same setup often gives better results.
Why CMM programming matters
A coordinate measuring machine measures a part by touching it at points and comparing the results to the model. The CMM follows a program that tells it where to probe. The listing names Zeiss CMM programming, which means the shop writes those programs. Good measurement planning shows whether the part meets the drawing, not just whether it looks right. If you need a report, say which features to include.
Materials
The listing names aluminum, steel, brass and industrial plastics. Aluminum is light and cuts quickly. Steel is strong and common for structural parts. Brass machines cleanly and is often used for fittings and contacts. Industrial plastics are chosen for weight, insulation or chemical resistance. Each material reacts to heat and cutting force a bit differently, which affects how tight a tolerance can be held.
Family-run, since 2006
The listing describes Condor as family-run and established in 2006. Small shops often put the owners close to the work, which can make communication more direct. That said, your own review of samples and quotes is the best way to judge any supplier.
What to include with your RFQ
- Drawing with tolerances and datums marked
- Material and grade
- Quantity and expected reorders
- Which dimensions are critical
- Finish or coating
- Whether a CMM report is needed
- Delivery date
Keep the print honest
Look at your drawing and mark only the truly critical tolerances. A general tolerance for everything else saves money. If you are unsure, ask the shop which features are driving the price.
Fremont convenience
A local shop can discuss measurement results in person when a part is borderline.
Temperature, fixturing and why tight work takes time
Metal grows slightly when it warms, and a part cut warm can measure differently once it cools. Tight tolerance work usually involves allowing parts to settle before final measurement and holding them gently so clamps do not distort thin walls. These steps take time, which is one reason tight parts cost more per piece. Expect your quote to reflect the extra care, and ask whether a small change in tolerance could lower the cost without hurting function.
Prototypes that become production
If you plan to scale a design, order the prototype with the production tolerances in mind. Otherwise a part that passes as a one-off may need a new process later.
